Women I Love: Julianne Moore

I LOVE Meryl Streep but if I had to choose, I think the title of today's finest actress equal belongs to Julianne Moore. Watching Game Change the other night, I was more than impressed at her ability as an actress to have me look at Sarah Palin through different eyes. I don't agree with her positions any more than I did before I saw the movie, but Moore's portrayal brought sides to a woman the press had pretty much painted with just one stroke.



There was nothing really new in the way of facts unveiled in Game Change, but what was new was perspective. In Moore's talented hands, I found myself having empathy for a woman in way over her head, under a relentless and uncaring microscope that she had no way, and especially time, to prepare for. Of course Palin was not even close to being ready to take on the position, but nor did she seek it. Someone asked her. It is McCain who bears responsibility for bestowing power on someone so not ready to wield it.



With only a few missteps (chiefly Hannibal), Moore's choices of roles are generally superb. I think she first came to my attention in Short Cuts and among my favorite performances are Moore's roles The Hours, Far From Heaven and the under appreciated Shipping News. Moore has been fearless in her choices and doesn't shy away from showing skin, and thankfully so have many of the men she has shared the screen with. Favorite Import Of The Day: Jeremy Irvine

From the little I have seen and read, War Horse as a play is a remarkable piece of theatre. As a movie, the results were hit and miss. Beautifully shot, the movie had moments of power (the fence scene), and also long flat periods. It almost seemed like Spielberg was 'putting in time' at some points to get to the predictable, yet admittedly moving, climax.



The movie was at it's best when the two leads, Jeremy Irvine and Joey were on screen together. Jeremy Irvine was a great find by Spielberg for the role. The director has a masterful track record finding young actors (Henry Thomas, Haley Joel Osment, Charlie Korsmo) to perfectly embody the magic he is creating. There is a special quality to Irvine which other directors clearly saw. The 21 year old has a slew of new roles including Pip in the newest version of Great Expectations.

Channing Tatum: Backing It Up!

I posted recently about my new found respect for actor Channing Tatum. (Just Because: Magic Mike) The actor continues to up his cool quota by backing his bountiful booty into the waiting hands of Elton John recently. On stage for Revlon's Rainforest Fund Concert, Channing and Elton performed on stage at Carnegie Hall singing ‘Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend’ . Other artists performing included James Taylor, Jennifer Hudson, and Bruno Mars.

The Men Of The Hunger Games

After a discussion (ok, an argument) with a few of my friends Thursday night, we headed out to Hunger Games. One of them wanted to see Titanic 3D but I barely got through it's drawn out melodramatic love story the first time and had no intention of seeing it again. Everything I had heard about the film was positive but I still had reservations as the films appeal has been compared to that of the Twilight saga, yet another blockbuster I had a hard time getting through.



I loved the film, and it's cast all superb. Although led by a the incredible Jennifer Lawrence, the heroine was surrounded by plenty of testosterone to please anyone needing a little male distraction with their action. Stanley Tucci, Wes Bentley, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Woody Harrelson and the oh so hot Alexander Ludwig are all more than able to fill one's hunger craving.



Most impressive was actor Josh Hutcherson who, (I know I must live under a rock) I had not really heard of until this film. It is a testament to his acting skills that a character at times you dismiss, dislike and distrust becomes one, which by the third act, you end up routing for. It is also a testament to the appeal of Liam Hemsworth that in only a few short scenes, you still want the heroine to choose him.
